I have a gun I am thinking of selling. No idea what kind of gun it is because i cannot find it in any books. Description is as follows:It reads Marlin 1898. It is lever action. 38 w is the caliber. Has a octagon barrel. The action and barrel are chromed. Can anyone tell me it's worth and any facts?

1. not too heavy or bulky
2. .38 cal or larger
3. price under $1,000.00
4. ease of use and accuracy is important
appreciate your thoughts.
I appreciate your help.
Concealble: Do you normally wear a suit and tie? Priests Vestments? Shorts and a Tee shirt? Shirt tail in or out?
Not too heavy or bulky: Are you a 105 lb young lady or 6'4" 280 lb truck driver? What's heavy for one might be perfect for the other.
.38 cal or larger: is .380 considered a .38? How about .38 S&W, a somewhat anemic round? is .44 Mag too much larger?
Are you comfortable with firearms or will this be your first? Revolver or Semi-auto will help drive caliber selection and influence size and concealability.
Typically, I like to recommend that someone new to firearms start by going to a gun shop and holding in your hand several different types, actually shoot some if possible and get a feel for what you are going to be comfortable with. Then, within that comfort zone, set out some parameters and look for advice.
If you are comfortable with firearms but new to concealed carry the same process applies but direct your efforts to those handguns you are comfortable with.

1. It is small and light.
2. It is in .38 Special cal.
3. The price is well under $1,000.
4. It is easier to use than a semi-auto. All you have to do is pull the trigger. No worry about safety being on or off or cocking the hammer.
5. It is plenty accurate for self defense purposes. <25 yards.
If you had asked about a handgun for carrying in a holster for law enforcement use, for a handgun for hunting, or for a target pistol my suggestions would be different.
The first is one of the smaller, lighter, traditional service pistols, the latter is what most of the posts are recommending you replace.
Price is $500-650
I carry one in a Fobus paddle holster, and sometimes I forget it is on me.
