I have a Gew98 stampped Berlin 1916 on the receiver. Serial numbers are in the 2500 range and all numbers match. Wood and metal are also in vg to exc condition. Looking for info about this rifle (history - value )Thanks, Dave

Need pics of it to give value. These got moved around alot after ww1 to other armies, or were bring backs.

DWM was the only Gewehr maker that had Berlin as an address. Your rifle should have a Lange rear sight commonly called the "roller coaster" sight. If there is a lower case letter below the serial number on the receiver, it is part of the serno and required to accurately account and date the month of the rifles manufacture.

There is a lot of bogus info floating about on these rifles. Only last year was a book printed in Germany that deals with the Gew and Kar 98 only. It's called GEWEHR 98. There is also an English edition available. I understand that a couple of dealers in the states brought some in, so you don't have to procure Euros to order from the publisher anymore.

In the thirties, Weimar had Simson build some Kar 98b's and converted some Gew's to what is known as the "Transition" model used prior to the adoption of the Kar 98k. It would be best if you posted a couple of photos of the weapon. Weimar eagles appear on these instead of the Crown Fraktur acceptance marking.

Thank you for the replys. Yes it has a Lange rear sight and it appears to have a set of lower case letters below the serial # on the receiver as well as the barrel. They appear to be hh or kk. I will try to get some photo's of entire rifle, Thanks - Dave

Hi all, I'm new here and I'm just getting into Gew 98's. I've been reading what I can, and have tried to find the book mentioned "Gewehr 98" ... I've googled it without success..., nor can I seem to find it on Amazon :-( Can anyone point me to more info on it, like the author or publisher, or a place where I can buy a copy? Thanks much and Best Regards!

The one that I use, and recommend. Is "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" by Robert Ball. Edition 4, is now being sold. Amazon and all the major bookstores carry it. It a wealth of information and pictures.

I misquoted the title. Here's the website in Germany and hit the icon for the English one if you want. Scroll down until you see the Model 98 book. It blows any other book out of the water concerning Gew. and Kar 98s (WWI).
