What type of barrel would be best for turkey hunting with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge?
I have a 500 slug gun that is brand new, never fired condition, and I am thinking of buying another barrel to make it a turkey gun.
Here are the barrels they offer for the 500:

I would get the AP 90135 and get a good choke for turkey's.
I meant the 90135, hit wrong key [B)]

Phi, the above recommendation won't fit your gun, as it is for the 20ga. I would purchase this one... SECURITY 90140 VENT RIB, BEAD SIGHT 12 GA. 20" ACCU-SET BLUE $155.40
Buy an extended extra full accu-choke tube that is OK to shoot lead shot through, and you should be all set. If you are patient, and list this over on the 'wanted' forum, I should think that someone will have a used one he is willing to part with for around $100-$125. The 20 inch barrels are very quick pointing and very light to carry around in the field all day when you are persuing other game besides turkey.

What you want is a 24" barrel with a good "extra-full" turkey choke. Mossberg makes a nice one that comes ported which is a nice feature to have when shooting those heavy turkey loads. Also this barrel has a double bead, something that I personally love, especially when shooting 40+yds.

I'd find a long fixed choke barrel in a pawn shop or similar location for dirt cheap, have it chopped to 20 or so inches, and a new threaded choke system put in...

I have a 500 with a 28'' barrel and super full choke and I've taken more birds with that barrel than with any other gauge in my cabinet. Turkeys can be tough, though my boss says to use 5 or 6 shot for turkeys (i use 3'' magnums). Tinman
