I am looking to purchase a new gun at a reasonable price. The mossburg mo. 100 ATR look to be a nice gun but I have been told this is a cheap gun made be Rapter. The Savage is 200 is a better gun for the price I have been told. Anybody have any thoughts Thanks Busman

Looking for some opinions. I'm deciding what I want to do with a new gun. Primarily, I'm looking for a solution for a permanent gun for deer and turkey. I have a Mossberg 835. Option 1 is to buy a slug barrel for it, and mount some kind of scope on it, and just change barrels for deer and turkey, in which case I'll probably go out and buy the new 935 for waterfowl hunting, since thats where the majority of my shooting is as far as 12 gauge goes. Option 2 is to buy a single-shot, interchangable barreled gun. The two I like most are the T/C Encore and the new Mossberg SSI....I really like the value and quality of Mossberg, so thats probably my first choice in that department right now. They dont have as many barrels as the T/C, but more than enough to fit my purposes. Does anyone have an opinion? Or good/bad experiences with the 935 or SSI? Thanks

savage will run you a little more but is a better system, a stevens 200 is a savage without the accutrigger, stevens is affordable but without the trigger I rather spend the money on a accutrigger.

The Savage is the best value for a rifle made today, great trigger and extreemly accurate. The Mossberg has the worst trigger of any rifle made today (8 lbs and very gritty with a ton of take up) and is known for horrable accuracy from a modern rifle (2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with good ammo from the bench).

Look at the Savage 11F, it has the accu-trigger but it only comes in 308 and 7mm-08 Rem, 243,22-250 and 223. And the price it not that much of a difference.

certainly the savage is far superior to the mossberg, trigger, accuracy, everything.
you may want to wait and examine the new marlin XL7 coming out in that same price range

Welcome to the forum. It is easy to compare pricing for various brands on the auction side of this site. Have you looked at the Howa 1500 series and the Weatherby Vanguard series of rifles. They get very good reviews and are at the lower end of the cost range, meaning very similar to the Savage. What cartridge and use do you intend for this rifle? Plinking, target, lite varmint, deer & big game?

    busman1,

My first choice would be the Savage/Stevens 200. Like all have said before it is the Savage action with no Accutrigger and the cheapest plastic injected stock they could stick on it. That said they still shoot pretty good. Like MOA good. A .243 in this rifle would serve you well.

As far as Mossberg, we had several out on the range this past fall for deer rifle sight-in. Two that I know of were zeroed in short order. One that I know of, took all day and several boxes of ammo. I'm thinking it was the shooters. Mossberg is okay, but I would take the Savage.

As for the Howa 1500's/Weatherby Vanguards, I've had some experience with them. I will say the accuracy was good but not as good I felt as my Savage. Again though, could be the shooter. I haven't had a lot of time with these rifles to work up to how well they can shoot.

My bottom line is I would go with what I know shoots well. And for bargain basement prices the Savage/Stevens 200 shoots extremely well.
If you were to go another $100 you could get a Savage model 10 package. And if you didn't like it, have a more marketable resale item.
