I am a new Member here, but have lurked a long time. You have to watch the "assault" talk. Assault as you speak of is a action taken, not a gun. So terms more like AR and AK are commonly used with true gun enthusists. Just some freindly advice. As for your question though. I guess someone else will have to anwser that. I have a AR on the way, but this is my first so I am still learning also.

I think DMPS makes a dedicated .22 upper for an AR..best of both worlds...

THere are used Mitchell Arms .22 AK's, and Jaeger AR's out there, they look prety close

Armi-Jager is the company your thinking of. It was a Italian Company who made .22 Cal. replicas of various assault rifles . Including M-16, AK 47, Galil & FA MAS. There might be others also, but these are the ones I'm familiar with.

The only other company that made a .22 replica of the M-16 was a Philippine Company by the name Armscorp/Squires-Bingham.

The Italian Company is now out of business as far as I know. Their replicas were made in the early 80's, to mid 90's time frame.

Less expensive are Squires Bingham and Armscorp (Philipines) versions. Many show up on the auction sites. M-16, AK-47, PPsH look-similars.

The GSG-5 is all the current rage. Made by German Sport Guns.
