I've been thinking about getting a .17 HMR any opinions on this little round? Is it worth it compared to a .22? what will it take down etc?

Was looking for an inexpensive .17 HMR for my son for his birthday. Does anyone know anything about the Rossi?

Bass Pro has 3 different .17 HMR's on sale next week. That is all I need and am going to purchase one. Remington semi auto, Savage bolt and I believe a Marlin bolt. What is everyones opinion on which is better?

    Thanks

I have been killing prairie dogs at 230 yards.

Easy shots from 100 up to 175 yards.

    I agree with MBK.

I have made many shots on Townsend ground squirrels (much smaller than true prairie dogs, often the size of a large mouse), at up to 200 yards or a little over. However, wind drift becomes a big issue here in the Western high desert. The 17 HMR, with a 10 MPH crosswind, drifts about 3, 8, and 15 inches at 100, 150, and 200 yards, respectively. You can quickly see that wind will complicate matters with small targets.

We also have jacks and rockchucks here, which offer much larger targets, but killing power becomes an issue after 175 or 200 yards. I have made a number of 200 or so yard shots on them, but a vital hit is critical.

I cannot recall for sure, but if high accuracy is one of your objectives, you can probably do much better than the Henry.

There is a good accuracy-testing article about 17 HMR rifles at chuckhawks.com/17hmr that you may find useful. Although it is just one test, he does quite a thorough job.

Are you saying the henry is not all that accurate ? Im looking at the henry because I like the lever action feature . I looked at ruger but didnt care for it too much. I thought Marlin would have one but I was wrong , that wouldve been sweet because it wouldve matched my 44 marlin Lever action.

I use a Savage 93 bolt with a theumhole stock, and a Sweet 17 BSA scope.

Shot one for the first time last week. Stainless ruger with a weaver 4x. Dead on at 175 and terminal results were impressive. Bunny didn't stand a chance.

150 yards; 200 yards tops if your target is any size at all. The terminal ballistics at 200 yards isn't really enough for anything like a jackrabbit. When I get out to 200 yards and beyond I really like my little 19 Calhoon, much better knockdown. 350 yards and beyond, can't beat the 22-250 or 6MMBR.
