I have a Rem 581 with what appears to be a non adjustable trigger. Currently the pull weigth is about 5-6 lbs. I would like to have it at half that. Any ideas on how to best accomplish it?

I have not played with one of those yet. I have a smith that handles anything that is not readily decipherable to me.

    5mmgunguy,

Sorry, I've been laid up the last few days.

You should check with Brian Voelker in Iowa who works on these first. Someone who understands and works on these triggers is worth their weight in gold.

581s are similar to 540 target rifles but with a nonadjustable trigger. There is only a single trigger mainspring and the folks that I have spoken with suggest that this can be replaced with a lighter spring to improve the weight of pull. In this same vein, light polishing will help this also. Be aware that on non-adjustable triggers, the geometry will change if you attempt to remove material. You can create a dangerous situation or ruin the trigger at the least. I don't recommend this to the the general population due to lack of experience, so be careful.

This is not my area of expertise but you can also look into a couple of other triggers that might be substituted, factory target triggers made for 540/541s fit 581s.

You can ask JC also but this may not be on his list:

    ADDED:

    tsr,

It's been going on for the last 1-1/2 months. I got a face full of dust while cleaning the shop and it had a bad mixture of stuff in it. I hadn't intended on getting into the places I ended up so I didn't have a mask on as I usually do. Dumb. Breathing is a little rough but it seems to be improving slowly. I had a relapse the other day and couldn't do much at all.

    Best.

    5MM,

Follow Nononsense's advice, and get someone who is noted for their work on these. It will pay dividends in the end, and you will still have something usable.

    Nononsense,
Hope that is because of a recoil headache, and not the flu, or something worse. In any case...we missed your wisdom!

Playing with trigger pulls often affects and disables safeties.
After you have the trigger pull fixed or replaced with a target trigger,
pull the trigger with the safety on then release the trigger.
If the hammer falls by itself or if you can jar it off, you have an unsafe rifle that need work on the safety.
