NOTPARS,
Ha! now that we know you have an AR-10 we can really work you over!![:D][:D]. I totally understand the weight thing. I packed my CETME and 240 rds. on a scoot & Shoot a while back and thought OMG!! what did the guys in WWII have to endure. Thus enter the AR-15 with the lighter 5.56 rounds. I packed one for four years and let me tell you I wasn't impressed with the power of the round. bgjohn suggests shooting it twice. That is a long time to stay up shooting when bullets are coming back at you.
Something light like that would be quite the deal. I obviously want a round that packs power, but still has a zero POA/POI on a body out to 300m. Anything that will be ballistically effective beyond that, even if I have to introduce a different round into my inventory, would be a huge plus. Oh, AAAANND...it has to fit the AR platform.
Enter the 6.5 Grendel. It does all the above. With a 108 gr. round pushed out at 2400 fps.(which is very reasonable for that round to attain) it maintains a 10" kill zone out to 300 yds. With a lot more oomph than a 5.56. And a lot less weight than a 7.62. You can load up 6.5 Grendel with 123's or 140's or 144's for high ballistic long range shooting....from an AR platform no less. Since the military and Bureau of Ordnance hit the IGNORE! button on this one it is now available to the public. The brass weighs 110 gr., the charge 30 and the bullet 100-108/110 depending on what you want for a total of 250(max). That's only 70'ish gr. more than a M855 (95/25/62). About one pound more per hundred. Instead of twice the weight that a 7.62 is. Something to consider.
I'm also in favor of the old style M1/M1A/M14 action. It was more functional, when reliability is the key, than the AR action that poops in it's own guts. My $.02

One pass with a 6mm expanding button converts the standard 223 case.
Soft points dont feed well in the AR but HPs do.
