Colt Border Patrol NIB 100% Condition

I am sorting my recently deceased father's firearm collection and am hoping for some assistance with one of the revolvers.
I will be training my mother in the use of a personal protection revolver and will either purchase a newer hammerless .357/.38 revolver or use the Colt in question here depending on the input provided.
I don't have the gun at hand or I would post a photo as well- I may be misremembering some of the details:
It is a Colt .357 blued finish, 4" barrel, Border Patrol, in the original but mangled box, never fired and in perfect condition. The barrel stamp of "Colt Border Patrol" is in gold. The receipt indicates it was purchased in the early 80's.
Any idea if this firearm is worth any more than $400 or so based on the unused condition and , as far as I can find, the "rare" gold lettering?
If this gun has some relative value it will go into my gun safe, otherwise it will be used by mother as an .38 caliber intruder deterrent.
I appreciate any input that is offered regarding the value of this firearm.

But, if your Mom is not now experienced with guns, training her may be difficult. I got mine a professionally installed alarm system with a panic button. Do what you think is best.
