Does anyone out there have any opinions about the new Hi Point Handguns by Polar Bear Ordinance? I have a variety of opinions from a very good gun to a "piece if crap". The price is certainly tempting for a "plinker".

I have one in .40 S&W. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Never has jammed, stovepiped or misfired. Ugly as a Glock, weighs a ton. But in the end It is a hell of a lot better than nothing. They also have a no questions asked lifetime warranty. Are they decent shooters..... yes. Are the the greatest gun ever... no. Those who trash them usually have never shot one. Mine happens to be extremely accurate, not anywhere near my favorite gun, but all and all it was worth the money.

I'm one of the guys who would not take one for free[:D] Yes, I have shot them, and they are junk as far as I'm concerned. The first one I shot was a 9mm and the rear sight flew off the gun when the slide came back. It was sent in, and yes they fixed it for free. Save a little more money and get a used CZ52, or some other quality used gun. You will enjoy shooting it much more, and you won't be sending it in to get fixed all the time. If your choice is a Hi-Point or nothing; take the nothing, at least you'll still have $100 in your pocket.

Thanks for the info guys. I actually have 2 Glocks and 1 H&K, so I know you usally get what you pay for...I was just thinking about one of these as a gift for a friend, but I don't know if I want to take a chance on it being junk. The friend isn't 100% gun smart, but I still don't want to shaft him with a piece of junk, even though it will be FREE to him.

If you want to lose him as a friend, it is the perfect gift....[;)]

I have shot a couple of them, but there is no way I would want to own one.

Just do a search on "Hi point", and you'll pick up ten threads on these.

My take on them, is why would you want to spend $150 on one of these plastic and zinc-alloy guns when $200 could net you a far better quality used Smith auto, revolver, or a military surplus type pistol?

In addition to the excellent Smith model 10 listed above (which happens to be a great first time choice for a new shooter), also try:

Smith Sigma (clone of Glock in .40 or 9mm), Star BM (Spanish 9mm 1911 copy), FEG PA-63 (Hungarian PPK-like gun in 9mm Makarov), Taurus .38+P special revolver. . .and these are just a few of the models I found searching the GB auction site for used pistols at $200 or less.

To field strip them for normal cleaning, they require a hammer and punch to be used.

    Junk.

Thanks guys, I have decided not to mess with these "cap" pistols. They sound like a waste of money!

They're about the cheapest new production large frame pistol in CF calibers out there.

For that they are very good. Better than Jennings, Jiminez, Lorcin, etc.

I'd rather pay the same money for a CZ 52, Makarov, PA63, etc. though.

UGLY, but that's my opinion. If they made them with wooden grips I might be more lenient.

Had one in 9mm and liked it. Plus it's made in the U.S. and has a lifetime warranty. Mine was pretty darn accurate - but not lefty friendly. Mike
