Or, you can experiment with different ammo to see which brand and loading shoots closest to point of aim.
The "textbook" sight picture is to align the top of the front sight with the top of the notch cut in the frame. With the S&W J-frame series, this will usually give you groups that are too low. So, for most loads, I aim by putting a certain amount of front sight above the plane of the rear sight, & put the front sight on the target.
With light guns & high power loads, you will usually get torque caused by the rotation of the bullet in the barrel. This will cause the gun to twist in your hand, & the groups will print to one side. (A heavy trigger & flinching will also do this.) Either compensate for this, or use a light load & install lighter springs.
Personally, I only shoot .38 special wadcutters in my lightweight S&W. Use of full power loads will cause excessive wear in this gun.

i have and shot guns for 20 years i do compite too IPSC aiming& flinching is not my problem and when i shot for groupping i start from single every shot
thanks
i use that revolver for self difence and carry it consilde .so there is no time to think where to aim but shot as i use to for years " put the front sight on the target"and squeeze the triger

Hi,
The S&W Bodyguard Airweight is a nice gun. Shrouded, slightly exoposed hammer, right? I have one of these and as noted, it is a self-defense gun. These are basically designed for close encounters of the worst kind.
Practice with this gun should be done in this manner:
--Use profile targets at a range of 8', 15' and at 25'. You'll get an idea of point of aim at these three distances.
--When you aim, don't try to line up the front sight with the groove in the top of the frame. Practice with a two-handed grip pointed straight out and put only the front sight on the target. The two-handed grip will help control rotation and muzzle jump.
--Center mass and head shots should be the only ones you consider to be hits. The .38S&W Special might leave your antagonist able to put one or more rounds into you, so practice hitting the kill zones.
--You can fire this gun single action, as the hammer shroud on this gun allows for SA, however, you should only practice double action. Unless you are very familiar with the weapon, lowering that hammer from SA full-cock can be tricky due to the full shroud leaving only a bit of the hammer exposed for your thumb pad to control.
--The Bodyguard has a 5-round cylinder, so you should load only 4 with the hammer down on the empty chamber. Therefore, practice with only 4 in the chamber.
--Load lead wadcutters or semi-wadcutters only for practice. Load +P only for carry. +Ps will eventually jolt the gun senseless, so don't fire them for practice or amusement. The gun won't blow up from them, but limit their use to punching an agressor's ticket.

Absolutely unnecessary... It's safe as can be with a fully loaded cylinder.
i do go with full five round in the cylinder and in practice too
i do not get when and why i have to lower the hammer from SA to DA
you shot the gun the way you carry it.when i ( you) have to use it no time to go for SA and if you do so you might let the gun go off becouse the triger pull became very light
thanks
