Ruger Mini 30????

Another question on the Ruger Mini 30. I found one, and you guys were right on as far as the accuracy goes, it sucked! For one thing I could not keep the scope mounts tight, at the range with only the basics as far as lock tight, shims, etc. goes. Stock Ruger rings on a Leupold scope, and I could not get better than about 10 to 12 inches at fifty yards, on a clear, windless day! Shot 100 rounds, and every 10 rounds, I had to retighten the ring screws, and mount screws. That is pitiful!
So my question is, while I was trying to sight it in, a Sheriff friend came by, and told me that Ruger had redesigned the mini 30 after Bill died, and they had addressed all of the accuracy issues, stiffened the barrel, redesigned the gas system, etc., etc.
I thought that Ruger had discontinued the mini 30 all together. Am I wrong, or has Ruger redone it to become a better shooter?
And if so, where can I find one? I have asked our limited gun shops, (2) around here where I live, and they don't have any information on it. What do you guys know?
Thanks as always,
BigBarn[:o)]

    BigBarn,

I haven't seen anything from Ruger about an 'Improved Mini-30'. There is an Improved Mini-14 that is supposed to be pretty good but I don't make much of an effort to keep up with Ruger except for the newer Hawkeye and the newer cartridges. The 6.8 SPC is a short .27 caliber cartridge that Remington developed. This is the News Release:

    Ruger Announces New All-Weatherr
Ranch Rifle Chambered in 6.8 SPC
    April 12, 2007
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR), is pleased to announce the introduction of the versatile Rugerr Ranch Rifle in the flat-shooting 6.8mm Remington SPC cartridge. This Special Purpose Cartridge (SPC), is extremely well suited to longer-range varmint and deer hunting applications in the redesigned Ruger Ranch Rifle.

The 6.8 SPC uses a .270" diameter bullet with performance similar to the venerable .257 Roberts. Its 110 grain bullet has a 2600 fps muzzle velocity, and at 100 yards has 78% more energy than a 55 grain .223 bullet. 115 grain bullets have a muzzle velocity of approximately 2500 fps, with moderate recoil and muzzle blast. On average, it packs about 20% more punch than the .223 cartridge, and its trajectory is close to that of a .308 Winchester out to 500 yards. Its ballistics and energy at 300 yards are virtually identical to the .243 Winchester-a fine, flat-shooting deer cartridge.

I have an older Blued Mini 30. El cheapo 3-9 Simmons. No problems with loose rings. I shoot cheap Wolf ammo. Full metal jacket and soft points. I have no trouble at 100yds freehand.. keeping a full 10 rd mag in a peanut butter lid. Maybe the barrel on your gun is shot out?? Check the auction side . Haven't shot a new model.

No problem with the barrel, this gun is brand new. I personally know the owner, and it has only had fifty to sixty rounds thru it. He also told me it is not very accurate, I guess he wasn't kidding!
Let me know if any other info out there.

Theres also a site that will do work on the mini's to make them much more acurate. You can spend a few bucks on it to make it a much better gun. See the link below.

I've got an older stainless Mini-30 topped with a 3x9 Tasco that will shoot +/-2" groups at 100 yards all day long as long as you shoot slow and don't let the bbl get too hot.

The older Mini's have a simple blade type front sight and the newer Mini's have a protected front sight like you'd find on a M1 and/or M1A. There was some talk when the new-style mini's came out that minor adjustments/modifications had been made to the gas system, but I don't remember hearing about any bbl mods.

If I remember correctly all U.S. made 7.62 ammo and guns are .308" while the Soviet Bloc 7.62 stuff is .311". Shooting cheap .311" Wolf or other Eastern Bloc ammo out of your .308 bbl won't yield the accuracy of domestic mfg hunting ammo.

BigBarn...I never had problems with the scope rings shooting loose on my Mini 30...never shot loose. Accuracy was best with steel case chinese...i know hard to believe but it outshot american 7.62x39 commercial ammo. With a 3 power scope, it would shoot 5 of the chinese 7.62x39 inside 1 1/2 inch at 100 yards. The best I can do with american commercial is 5 shots into 3 inches...double the chinese stuff...go figure. Mini 14 has a target version...never heard of a target Mini 30. One question is the rifle a ranch version or the standard version?

There were some Ruger rings that would screw all the way closed and still not grip tightly enough. If that is the case with yours try shimming the rings with strips of 600 grit paper, or try some new/different rings. Also try your Mini without the scope and check group size at 50 yards. Mine is a stainless model with a 4x scope and it shoots 4 inch and less groups routinely at 100 yards with cheap (used to be anyway) Russian ammo.

A pig is a pig. You can't make it a cow.

The ruger mini 14/30 suffers from extremely poor engeneering. The down sizing of the M1 garand to the mini14 was not done correctly. Some shoot great; but most don't.

If you buy one and it shoots then congrats for you! But, if you buy one and it doesn't shoot quite right; you're screwed!

You can not fix this firearm when it doesn't group well. You can only replace it.
