can someone give me some ballistic info for these two callibers? all i really need is the bullet weight and velocity at the end of the barrel...a friend is trying to choose between the two for a deer hunting rifle so i wanted to run the two calibers through the ballistic calculater...he would be buying factory ammo for it so keep that in mind...

    37rangemaster,

You don't even begin to offer enough information to start a project like this let alone keep it narrow enough for someone to attempt. But as a solution Remington, Winchester and Federal offer ballistic calculators on their websites. You and your friend can put your heads together and decide which bullets you want to consider and run the plots on each site.

    http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/

    http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/rifle.aspx

    http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/default.aspx

    Best.

In general my take between the two cartridges is that when shooting similar bullets, say the Nosler Partition, of the same cross sectional density, say (.424)then the 270win/130g@3000fps & the 7mm-08/140g@2800fps, there is something on the order of a 200fps edge for the 270. Still between the 270win and the 7mm-08 either is a great cartridge and will be tough to choose between.

+1, the 270 carries a little more punch. Both are excellent rounds for any side deer.

The deciding factor for me would be the price of ammo, which isn't that much of a difference, maybe a dollar a box, and that may swing either direction.

    37rangemaster,

The deciding factor for me would be recoil. How much does your friend like? the 270 will give better velocity in every weight category than does the 7mm-08. But, for me the 7mm 08 with 120's or 140's is a pleasure to shoot while the .270 takes a little more concentration after the first shot.
