Question for firearm sellers

I've never purchased a firearm over the web before. There is one I'm interested in bidding on, on GB and the seller lives in the same city as I do.
Would it be appropriate to ask to arrange a pickup to avoid shipping charges? I'm on a tight budget and every little bit helps.
I understand a private owner might be leery about such a transaction, especially with someone with no bidding history. Is this something that's not done or is it acceptable, I just don't know.
Thanks,
Rob
