Recoiling barrel model 11-48

on a remington model 11-48 shotgun browning patent,recoiling barell,what does recoiling barrel mean.and are there any other shotguns with a recoiling barrel?..thanks bridgebuilder41

    The recoiling barrel means just that, upon firing the barrel recoils back pushing the action to the rear position the bolt holds open until the barrel goes back to the forward position releasing the bolt and picking up another shell as it slams forward. The gun is spring operated more than gas operated as most semi auto shotguns. My first 12 guage was just this same gun and functioned great through thousands of rounds. I think Winchester had a recoiling barrel shotgun as well Model 10? I think.[;)]

    winchesters recoiling shotgun was a model 11 and a model 40.
