Spartan O/U-- Hard to open

I just purchased a Spartan o/u 20 ga. I've shot about 80 rounds through it and it is almost impossible to open after firing either or both barrels. It opens easily when empty or to unload.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there an easy fix for this annoying problem?

Have you tried cleaning it and oiling it?

Those guns are notorious for being Very Dirty from the factory. (I have a 12 gauge over under) The best thing to do is take it apart and thoroughly clean it. There will be small metal shavings and all kinds of gunk in there. Just take the stock off and you will see. They are pretty good guns for the $$$. There is a shotgun forum some where that give step by step instructions and pointers on those guns.

    Good Luck and enjoy,.. Fish[;)]

I cleaned it well before shooting it. It's like the ejectors react strongly to the recoil after shooting and bind at the rear of the receiver making it harder to open.

Mine was stiff when I first got it, I'm sure the more you work the action the smoother it will get. I would still take the stock off it (unless you did already) I will try to fin that shotgun forum I mentioned earlier.

I've never handled one of these guns but realize that when you go to open it after firing, you're cocking both hammers and the auto ejector springs as well. (Gun does have auto ejectors?) Maybe the ejector mechanism needs to be well lubricated and checked for burrs, etc.

    Good luck,

    Thanks for the help.
After reading your input, I now have a feeling that there is some gunk fouling up the release latch since it binds when trying to open it. The stock comes off tomorrow!!
    Thanks again to all.

I just finished taking the stock off the gun and the receiver action was very clean.
IMHO, here's what's wrong: the gun opens fine when the triggers have not been pulled. Pull either one and it is just a bear to break open. One thing works; after a trigger pull, if you move the safety to the rear in the safe position, it opens although still tight.
My manual says the safety is supposed to return to safe when breaking the action open but this is not happening. When I took it apart, I tried to figure out the connections for this result but couldn't.
My next step is back to Dick's to see if they'll exchange.

Sounds like the right thing to do.
    Good luck,
