Accurate loads for AR

A Friend of mine and myself went out to the range on Sunday. He took his DPMS AR. I have a bushmaster but I left it at home. After shooting his at 50 yards (with a scope) the best group we could get was around 5 inches. My question is: what is a good handload for the AR with a 16 inch barrel. Please tell me that I can get better groups than that with handloads!

I would guess you are using the wrong bullet weight for the rifling twist on the barrel. My Colt AR-15 with a 1/9 twist does well with 55 and 62 gr bullets. My hand loads group about 1 1/2" at 100 yds.

My {out}standing accuracy load for my AR is 60 gr. V-max in front of 23.5 gr. of AA-XMR 2015. I use 24 in my bolt gun. I also use 24 gr. for a 55 V-max. Same load as above for the Sierra 60 gr. HP. Same load as below for any 55 gr. FMJ. Reduce by 1 gr. for 62 gr. FMJ(milsurp).

Regardless of bullet weight that AR has a problem. Even a slow twist with 70 grain bullets will do better than that.
