870 Express mag. ext.

I have a 3 round magazine extension on my 870 express. I keep it at the ready for home defense, when not hunting with it. I recently purchased an 18.5" barrel for it. When I installed the barrel, the magazine extension sticks out 2" from the end of the barrel.
I assumed this set up was no good. Then I looked at pictures of the tactical and noticed the mag is longer then the barrel. 2" seems a little extreme though.
Is this cool or should I get a smaller extension? I think I know the answer, but am hoping I am wrong.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Also, the magazine tubes on the express shotguns have a tab on each side of the tube to hold the new style mag. plug in place. I was told that this would keep the rounds from feeding reliably from an 870 express with a mag. extension.
I recently bought a used 870 express and someone had pressed the tabs down inside the tube. I would assume this was because of the problem with the feeding.
Might take a look at that.

As for the spike, sounds like a good idea. I was thinking about getting one of those spikes from the WWI German Kaiser helmets.
Thnx for the info everyone.
Thanks

I could be looking at the wrong thing. There is a little BB like steel ball in the ring that goes around the magazine. When the nut is screwed down, the ball fits into the detents locking it in place. The original and the new barrel have the same setup and it is definetly an Express.
I know this is getting off topic, but am just trying to learn here.
Thnx again
Who would of thought a little ball would be such a mystery.
