870 Express mag. ext.

I have a 3 round magazine extension on my 870 express. I keep it at the ready for home defense, when not hunting with it. I recently purchased an 18.5" barrel for it. When I installed the barrel, the magazine extension sticks out 2" from the end of the barrel.
I assumed this set up was no good. Then I looked at pictures of the tactical and noticed the mag is longer then the barrel. 2" seems a little extreme though.
Is this cool or should I get a smaller extension? I think I know the answer, but am hoping I am wrong.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The extensions on our 870 Police shotguns stick out past the muzzle but not that far. I'd be leary of it but it is your gun.

Also, the magazine tubes on the express shotguns have a tab on each side of the tube to hold the new style mag. plug in place. I was told that this would keep the rounds from feeding reliably from an 870 express with a mag. extension.

I recently bought a used 870 express and someone had pressed the tabs down inside the tube. I would assume this was because of the problem with the feeding.

Might take a look at that.

get some spikes from some high schooler's track shoes.... attach them to the end of the mag extension.... sounds like a pretty cool weapon to me. seriously though, i can't see any problems with the magazine extension sticking out further than the end of the barrel except for looks. if you like it, keep it.

2" might give you some powder burns if you shoot it a lot. We had a guy at our matches that had one that stuck out about 5-6" past the bbl. and it just burnt the blueing off.

Sounds like good news. Not worried about looks, practicality (big word) is what i am after. As for the tabs, I looked for them but couldn't find any on the end magazine tube. It is about 20 years old. Not sure if that has something to do with it. No feeding problems though.
As for the spike, sounds like a good idea. I was thinking about getting one of those spikes from the WWI German Kaiser helmets.

    Thnx for the info everyone.

If it is 20 years old it may have the old style magazine plug. Check the barrel nut and if it has the ball detent then it is the old style. If there is just a hole there it is the new style.

It has the detents for the ball to fit into. Explains why I couldn't find any tabs. The new barrel has the ball and it is a NIB Remington barrel. Do they put it on all new barrels so they fit with the old and new style?

    Thanks

If it an express barrel it will not have the ball detent, just a hole where one could be put if you had the spring, ball and a staking tool. I have two express shotguns with three different barrels and none of the barrels have the detent ball. If it is for a Wingmaster it will have the ball detent.

    Hey Bode,

I could be looking at the wrong thing. There is a little BB like steel ball in the ring that goes around the magazine. When the nut is screwed down, the ball fits into the detents locking it in place. The original and the new barrel have the same setup and it is definetly an Express.
I know this is getting off topic, but am just trying to learn here.

    Thnx again

No, it was a NIB 18.5" police barrel made by Remington. I am not sure when it was made though. I bouht it off of GB from a reliable seller here. It was in the box and new and it works, I guess thats what really matters.

Who would of thought a little ball would be such a mystery.
