Carbine gas piston nut

I've been off the boards for awhile, [life gets complicated], but I need a little advice. I just purchased an M1 carbine from a distributor,[an import], Inland, with a 1944 barrel date. On disassembly, I found the gas piston nut to be unscrewed partway. I know a little about Garands, but not much about the carbine. I have purchased a wrench, but how tight do I screw it down, or is it supposed to be out partway. I have a book that states not to take it off very often, because it's supposed to be staked, but it didn't give any info about adjustment/tightening. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Doc

As long as you have the wrench, take the nut all the way out. Remove the piston. Clean all the carbon out of the threads in the piston housing and the nut. Replace the piston in the housing and install the nut..just snug it up with the wrench. Lightly stake the nut in place. You should be good to go for a very long time.

The nut was loose, so I took it out cleaned it as you say, but just wasn't sure how to much tighten it back. Thanks

There are no torque settings for the gas piston nut so just hand tighten it, then lightly stake it in place to keep it from turning.

Clean out the port while you're at it and check that the piston falls freely back and forth.
Tighten the threaded bushing to the end of its' travel and stake the housing lightly using a center punch.
    The nut wont back out.

Wrist tight! If the priston was loose in the carbine I have I may put little Lok Tite on it and it will stay for a real long time and come out real easy with out staking
