USPS priority mail. Broken down if possible.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Fed Ex. No hassels may not be cheapest. UPS gave me a lot of hassels. Local USPS does not seem to have a clue but I keep asking them.

USPS, Priority usually, Insured. Since they have to sign for the insured parcel I don't put signature required. I have shipped first class mail if money was tight, it's legal but the clerks at the post office don't like doing it, they want it to go priority.

I typically ship in a hard gun case although I have used a cardboard box and styrofoam. Hard gun case, wired shut with bailing wire and then duct taped in at least 4 places. Remove the bolt and wrap it in bubble wrap before wiring it shut. Place bill of sale, buyers address and copy of my drivers license (with DOB x-d out) and any other information inside.

Put address label on outside and wrap clear packing tape completely around the address so it can't come off and if it gets wet it is still legible.

Have never, ever, had a problem with a long gun shipped this way.

If you ship UPS, you have to go to a main hub. They will not ship from a local pick up point, unless it is a FFL dealer with an account. FEDEX is the most hastle free way for right now. When I ship, i put the rifle in an el-cheapo hard case(or its factory box), and put thatin a 9"x9"xtelescoping box, with lots of packing. I also insure for 25% more than its replacement price, incase the insurance is needed, and prorated. It is costly, but then everyone likes to get what they paid for in one piece, and they are more than willing to pay the shipping. These guys with a fixed 25-30 rate are either loosing their butt(like me) on the shipping, or the reciever might, or might not get their firearm in good condition.

I vote for Fed Ex. They are not anti-gun at all. UPS is. Priority mail is my second choice.

Fed Ex requires ALL firearms be shipped next day air premium. Very expensive. You can confirm this regulation on the Fed Ex site.

the previous post by Mr Capgun is erroneous. I just double checked the Fedex website to be sure Im right. Handguns are in a separte category and must go over-nite. Frankly Im a little tired of inexperienced people jumping in a topic they know nothing about. Fedex gladly accepts long guns for standard ground shipping, and always have. I have been using them for years with no problem.
