O/U 30 inch barrel Full/Full Choke?

What is the purpose of this shotgun? It is an O/U BSA 500 made by SKB in 12 GA with 2 3/4 inch chambers, 30 inch barrels choked Full and Full. I bought it because it looked like new without a trace of powder fouling anywhere and no signs of use and because it was priced right, $300. I am thinking about using it for turkey hunting despite the standard length chambers. Also, why would they put a barrel selector on the trigger if both barrels are full choked? Would it be a good gun for trap shooting? Thanks for any information.

It's a trap gun, use a mic and measure the chokes, one is probably a little tighter than the other, the top one. You got a pretty good buy, use it for a trap gun, or put it on the auction side and see if you can make a dollar.

when youre hunting, sometimes you put two different loads in a gun. one may have 9 shot, the other bbls might have 6's. thats what the selector is for.

Sounds to me like it's intended for pass shooting waterfowl.

It must have been intended as a trap gun, maybe for doubles, or as a live bird gun.

    "Not with 2&3/4 inch chambers"

Why not? It doesn't take a cannon to knock a duck out of the sky.

It wouldn't work as a trap gun...the first shot is usually made with an open choke, then the second shot would be from the full choke tube. I think a live bird gun would be a pretty good guess.

im/full is a good livebird. you have to shoot them before the circle.

Hello TWalker: Well lets start by the style of Butt Stock!
A Monte Carlo butt stock or a "straight Comb butt stock with approx. 1 1/2in. drop at the heel, you have a Trap gun.
If the DAH, is 2 1/4 in. you have a field gun.

Plenty of older O/U trap guns choked F/F. (Win. Md 101, Early 70s Browning Citoris)
F/F with a barrel sellecctor give you the option of which barrel you want to shoot first period. even on the Trap range. (Doubles, International Trap, (2 shots, one bird).

In the field usually find a F/F O/U Duck gun with 3 in. chambers. however there are field O/U that are F/F with 2 3/4in. chambers. When lead was legal for waterfowl, most waterfowlers used guns with FULL chokes period!

As bobski stated, you can vary your loads. Depending on what you were hunting and the time of the year, (early season birds vs late season when they have full plumage). I do that today, first shot of one size shot second or 3 rd shot with larger shot.

Today a F/F can be used for turkey, again you may have #4 in one barrel and #6 in the other. Being an O/U choked F/F don't shoot STEEL shot out of it. You will have to use Bismuth, Tungsten/Matrix etc.

Not the ideal dove and quail set up, but it could be used with a "spreader load or brush load" in one barrel, and a standard load in the second barrel.

Nice thing about a F/F gun, it's always easier to let the bird get another 5-10 yards further out, before you pull the trigger! It's hard to get a bird to come back to you so you can shoot at him! LOL

    Regards Dave
