Have an 1892 Win. SRC in 44-40, vintage is 1918. Probably 85-90%. I've owned it for about 12yrs & can't quit bring myself to fire it. I've had it loaded a couple of times but didn't pull the trigger. I've got a lot of 44-40 ammo & brass for my Vaquero & thought about getting a newer repro to shoot. Should I shoot the old Win.? Or keep it nice & buy a repro?

Buy a repro and take care of that old Winnie. If it's really in 85-90% original condition, you can buy a LOT of repro's with it!

I'm probably modest on the condition, nearly all of the bluing is still there. Hardly any marks on the barrel or frame. The ladder rear sight has a small dab of rust, the wood has a couple of nicks.

"85-90%" means to me that it has been handled, used and fired in the past. Can't see how running some of the modern 44-40, "Cowboy/SASS" ammo could possibly affect either it's condition or value. It's not a one of the kind, NIB collectors item, at "85-90%", and never will be.

Don't baby it, Winchester made it as a tool to be used. Not to be fondled as a collectors item. As long as your careful, and it's not in NIB condition, what difference does it make.

I would be shooting it. I have a 92 in 32-20 that was made in 1920 and I shoot it a good bit. If you just shoot it, it should not effect the finish.

Unless it appeared unused or unfired I would use it, but make sure you take good care of it. If you used it every day as a tool you would certainly cause wear, but occasional use isn't going to cause a problem in my opinion.

I still use a Winchester Model 92 44-40 SRC of the same condition and vintage along with a 1902 Colt Single Action Army in matching 44-40 to deer hunt for a few days during the season. As long as you take good care of it you aren't going to hurt it or cause it to lose value.

I still have a Model 1892 rifle in my collection that appears unused and unfired; that one I don't even work the lever on and I certainly wouldn't fire it!!!!

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

I have an 1892 in 38WCF, a 1895 vintage...I shoot it all the time. Infact, I just recently sold a Winchester repro 1892 Eruo Classic of which there was only 50 made...it was number 50. I shot it, but the original 1895 vintage, I like better. Don't let that old winchester die...breathe some life into it!
