Will the Ruger Mini 14 in .223 chamber and shoot 5.56 military? Or is there a Mini chambered for the 5.56?

    Thanks

What's it worth? Preban mini-14 with folding stock. Blue finish - not stainless. It's been shot plenty, but not beaten.

    Thanks -

I have a mini 14 186 series that I want to scope. I was planning on using the weaver # 48646 mount, but after reading more on the subject, it looks like Ruger moved the ejector pin to the lower section of the bolt face making it a top eject. I have not yet fired this gun and can not say for sure. Anyone know when and why this change was done? Would this cause a problem with ejection like the empty rounds hitting the scope? If so , I do not know of a scope mount that sets the scope above the ejection port that would work. Any comments, suggestions or ideas appreciated.

I was wondering if there are aftermarket mags that function as well as the factory mags for the mini 14?

Geting ready to purchase one ( maybe tomorrow), as far as cleaning a semi auto firearm ( never owned one) what should be used as far as functional parts? Oil or a gun grease?

    Hello,
Sorry for the long post but any help would be great.

Im looking at buying a new ruger mini 14, my local walmart is selling one ( hardwood, black barrel) the price was a little over $600, i have seen these guns for around $800+, should I be cautious about buying a rifle from walmart? What about this rifle should i be looking at to know I am geting what i want as far as different models of the mini 14? What would be a fair price on a new mini 14?

I also have a friend who is willing to sell me his remington 770 camo/stainless steel in .300 win mag, i have read horrible reviews about this gun as well as reivews saying it is a very accurate rifle, i am wanting a rifle to have in the woods and not worry about geting it banged up alittle, the rifle i am using now I love but want something i can be ok with geting ruffed up. He is offering me the gun for $300? Is this a fair price, or should I keep looking?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I may have the opportunity to purchase a Mini 14 in excellent condition for $300. I mentioned this deal to a friend, who was appauled and told me that they are junk. I am no expert, but upon inspection of the rifle, it looked to me to be the same system as an M-14, (just in .223) which I know to be a good rifle. I know the mini-14 has been around for a long time. If anyone could let me know if its worth buying.

What Probably needs to be done with an aftermarket Mini 14 magazine to make it function, is to take both magazines apart, and re-form the aftermarket follower to look like the factory follower as close as possible.

I have a Ruger mini-14 and would like to make some improvments/conversions to it; shorten barrel, add flash suppressor, improved trigger, buffer, rail mounts, ect. Make it tactical.
    What do you experts suggest?

Will the new Ranch models 223 also chamber the 5.56 NATO?

I think its a great rifle! Stick with factory mags. The aftermarket ones that I have played with are dissapointing.

There are a lot of owners that are not very happy with the mini-14.
Most complaints, if not all, are accuracy related.
I have a ranch rifle, and did not expect the accuracy to exceed that of an AK......meaning I can hit a skillet at 100 yards most of the time.

I bought it when I stumbled on to it...it was NIB w/syn stock at a good price. I keep it because it is the only rifle I own in that caliber.

    $ 0.02

My mini 14 was the first semi auto I bought twenty some odd years back. I still have it. It has always been a great "truck" type rifle in that it needs very little care to always keep working. But, it never, on it's best day, been what most would consider very accurate. At 100yds 5" groups are a good day, which is fine if you are just snapping off a shot at wilie C. This has been the norm for every mini any of my cirle of shooting friend has had. I'm sure that there are exceptions and that the newer models are better then the older. But, if you want to shoot little tiny group or small varmints at longer ranges there are much better rifles then the mini. One of the mini's big problems is that it isn't easy to modify, whereas the AR15 type platform is simple. If you buy a mini it will be a lot of fun, just don't make a wagers that it will out shoot your buddies bolt action.....

"IF" you want something along a "truck rifle" I'd suggest a SKS! The one I had had pretty good accuracy (6" skillet @ 100 yd.s - interesting accuracy gage! *G*) and a pretty cheap weapon. I HAD a mini 14, don't any more!

Mini 14 is my first and only as of yet centerfire rifle. I will admit it isnt as accurate as sum but good enough to shoot a coyote every now and then. They are great shooters with few problems. Aftermarket mags usually dont work. although I have come across some polymer ones that fit both the mini and an AR-15 that work just as good as factory produced mags.

    Ruger doped the ball [V]

I don't know where they went wrong, me thinks it is the twist rate or the barrel quality

I traded mine off bought an AR and have never looked back

A Mini 30 might be better accuracy wise???

Jeb, I have both a Mini 14 and Deerfield 44. I was told both had poor accuracy. Accuracy for the most part is in the hand of the beholder and not the weapon. I can shoot 4'' groups at 100 yds with both. After about 6 rounds the 44 starts to get out of that range a little.

if you dont mind a scope on the mini 14, you can take the front sight off (remove a pin) to release pressure on the end of the barrel which should improve your accuracy...or so I've heard

Mine goes bang every time I pull the trigger and accuracy is on par with an M1 carbine, maybe a touch better. That's why I bought it and that's about what it's good for. I think any comparison to an AR or M1A is a bit off, comparing its accuracy & function to the carbine seems appropriate.
