would you get from these type sights? looking at one for cast bullet matches and they shoot some at 300 yds and there appears to be no way to put a vernier sight on these as they have no tang so could you get enugh elevation with this or could a base be put under it

Not knowing the rules for you class of shooting, it seems to me that a base could be made for the top to adapt a Anschutz sight (might be too tall) to that rifle. Or, a base could be made to adapt a Redfield Palma or International sight to the side of the barrel. Any competent gunsmith/tool maker should be able to make a base for you.

If you need a drawing let me know.

I would think you would want accurate/repeatable windage and elevation adjustments.

I am sure you could put a spacer under the factory Williams sight to get you up to 300 yards. Problem is, you might not then be able to get back down to 100.

I have seen tang sights put on these by drilling and tapping the receiver for the front screw and either putting a wood screw through the rear of the base or inletting a threaded bushing into the stock.

Smith Enterprise makes a ladder type sight to mount on the barrel with a lot of elevation. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=18735&title=WESSON & HARRINGTON LONG RANGE SIGHT

Check the rules before you have a base made for a modern receiver sight.

Most, if not all, of the long range black powder shooter I know use a finely adjustable rear sight. As you said, you will be taking shots OUT to 300 yards. I imagine that you might be shooting from 50 yds out to that distance. That's why I suggested REPEATABILITY. There are plenty of other adjustable peep sights other then Plamas and the like. Back in the mid 50s I know of a fella that converted a High Wall into a 50 cal muzzle loader for his wife to shoot at target matches. It still has the same Lyman Receiver mounted Peep that was installed way back then.

And in the words of Wesson & Harrington - "Top of ladder is engraved with the year 1873 for authenticity." Why not do the same to a Lyman or Redfield peep?

You are using a modern rifle for this shooting. Where can we find the rules?
