can 30-06 ammo be used in rifles made for 30-03?

    Yes,but 30-03 ammo should never be used in 30-06. 30-03 ammo had a longer neck that would raise pressure if fired in a 30-06 chamber.

    Hi,

    Just for information, the military tested 30-06 rounds in rifles chambered for the 30-03 and that is the reason there are not many military rifles remaining chambered in 30-03.

    The military found out that due to the slightly longer throat of the 30-03, it would cause the 30-06 bullet to jump the distance and gave the 30-03 rifles poor accuracy.

    I'm curious as to why this question. If you have a rifle chambered for .30-03, in safe shootable condition, odds are it has sufficient collector value to justify not shooting it. Just my $.02 on the subject.

    As a add-on to HeavyIron's post, part of the accuracy problem is that the -03 was designed around a 220gr Roundnose bullet, while the -06 was designed around a 150gr Spitzer bullet.
    You will probably find you get your best accuracy results with -06 ammo that's been loaded with 220gr RN bullets.
