check this shotgun for a patent date. there was a patent issued to a G. Henry for a side hammer single barrel shotgun patent #461679 dated october 20, 1891. very little else is known about this shotgun other than one other has turned up in the last year or so.

Bill: Ran across a mention for the HENRY Gun Company, Belguim c. 1900 Maker of Double Barrel, Side by Side Shotguns...also referance to a Single Shot, Hammer, Steel Barreled Shotgun...Think maybe Woodshed has a Belguim made Scattergun?...Did anyone mention to Him to look and See if the Water Table Has The ELG in the Oval...?

How about some photos? We had a HENRY side hammer 12 gauge in the family for years. I always thought it was the same Henry as the rifle, no?

EDIT: Here are the photos of woodshed87 Henry. It's just like the one I used to have. Can't wait to find out what it is.

The front screw on the side plate is incorrect. Those screw heads were contoured to the shape of the side plate (a nice example of craftsmanship). It also looks like the stock is cracked. I know that mine was. The spine that goes into the stock doesn't leave much wood to hold the works together.

the only way we are going to be able to tell more about this single barrel, is with pictures and a complete description of all the markings and where they are found. my list of brand name shotguns include the 'henry gun company' as being seen on belgium double barrels (no mention of single barrels) with no manufacturer or retailer reference given. my list is an accumation of just about everthing published on brand name shotguns, but i do not consider it complete or even 100% accutate as new information is turning up almost daly on these shotguns.

this is just about a match for the other g. henry single barrel i have and is very close to the patent 461679. i can't see the markings on this one but the picture i have of the other one show markings on right side of reciever (just above the bar) of G. HENRY PAT.OCT.20,1891.

the book "american gun makers" by satterlee and gluckman has this listing on page 71 "Henry, Grandville-of boston and philadelphi. son of James Henry born 1835 died 1912" plus a little more. this book has four pages of Henry's starting as early as 1729 all were sword or arms makers and none seems to have been any kin of B.Tyler Henry who worked for winchester at new haven.

with a single barrel shotgun this old it should be considered a black powder only and retired to a place of honor for all the good service it has given.

    OK Guys Lets try this...
    Here we go.
This is the only Markings on the Gun.
    The Name "Henry"
Above the Barrel Lock slide bar on Left side of the receiver.
And VIII on inside of Forearm Carved in the wood.
No Other Markings/ Patent Dates or such. "Zilch"
    Good Luck!!
    Thanks...

not much else i can add except it is most likely a later version of the other one i have a picture of. possible made as late as 1908/1910 after patent protection expired.

the gun in the pictures is the same as the other one i have and looks close to the patent drawing that it has to be the same gun. i believe this is about all the information you are going to find until someone does extensive research on patented single barrel shotguns.
