Value of Ruger .357 Maximum

A local store has a Ruger .357 Maximum with a 10 inch barrel for sale. It has a Burris pistol scope and the gun's sights have been removed. The top strap appears to have been drilled and tapped for the scope base. The asking price is $495. How is the price in your opinion? Other than the items mentioned, the Ruger is in about 98% condition. Thanks for any replies.

If sights were removed and it was drilled and tapped It could not be a 98% pistol IMHO if the finish is 98% that is something different. again IMHO the collector interest value would be 50% of one that is all original. I think price is out of line but if you need Cases to reload let me know.

I agree that it has lost its collector value. I am considering buying it as a shooter. I was wondering what would be a fair price to offer the pawn shop. I was thinking $425? They have had it for over 3 months. I'll let you know if I buy it. Thanks for your reply.

Just make sure if you shoot .357 Maximum loads in it that you stay with 158 grain and higher bullets so that you don't run into the flame cutting issue(one of the reasons this gun was discontinued was 125 and 110 grain loads were being pushed to the limit and were flame cutting the top straps) You can of course just stick with .357 Mag & .38 Special loads. I'd offer them $400 and call it a day as most pawn shops would never pay more than about $200 for that gun.

I wouldn't write off the lighter bullets, though the 158 to 180 certainly make sense in the larger Maximum case.
Flamecutting with lighter bullets was an overstated problem, IMHO, and rarely progressed past a minimal initial cutting.

I tried to buy some cases at the last gun show I went to. There weren't any to be had & if there had been the prices they were telling me were way too high.
I have not had very great results with .357 mags & terrible results with .38 specials in my Thompson Contender. I can use them but they are a poor substitute.

i too had a tc 14 inch barrel in 357 rem max. but the cost of brass was going up,so i had a 10 inch 357 mag barrel rechambered to 35 rem. as the twist is 1-in-16 for both barrels it works well. it does every thing the 357 rem max does and more and i can get cases any where. i also have cases and dies for the 357 max. eastbank.
