home threading ar barrels

hi,i bought a bushmaster during those dark clinton gun ban years and would like to add a brake.is it easy enough to do at home,with the proper dies or maybe by a local smith?i hate the thought of paying an advertised specialist+shipping unless its neccesary to do it right.thx

Call around and ask if they have the proper equipment for and will thread AR barrels for a muzzle brake. Also ask how many of them they've done. Be sure to know which brake you are intending to have installed. I suggest you buy the part from the gunsmith, letting him order and install it.

If it is just for a flashider, then do it yourself.
1/2"X28 die.

If a suppressor or muzzlebrake , find a machinist near you.

That's the best thing to do. The end of the barrel might have to be turned down to thread it.

take it to a machinest or a gunsmith

Tell the machinist to thread the barrel with a threading tool bit to at least a class 2 thread- better a class 3 thread. Give him the MB or FH to try.
Tell him you DO NOT want a die cut thread.
