Older remington with Stainless barrel

I have a six digit remington 700, in 7mm Mag. The guy I bought it off of, said it had not been rebarreled, but the rifle barrel is stainless, but he said it had some kind of coating on it, it was flaking off, so he had it removed. I'm just wondering how true this is or if they did make such an animal. Thanks Don

Remington rifles are dated by the code on the barrel NOT by the serial number. This rifle may not be that old.

It has the holes on the left side, for an apature sight, and on the barrel, all I can find is 13 stamped big, wo stamped small, and 14 stamped big. If everything is correct, it would have been made in july of 72 correct? I just wondered if Remington made stainless barrels then, or coated them? I never remember seeing stainless 700's until maybe the 80's. Just curious

A few of the early 700's did indeed come with stainless barrels that had some sort of darkening finish (not bluing, per se). I had one in 17Rem caliber. Cleaned that rifle's bore one day and finished up with a dry, tight patch. I wasn't aware that the jag had stripped loose from the skinny little rod, and was left behind as a complete and total obstruction. I found out the next day at the range. Upon firing, it made a funny hissing sound and let loose a great volume of heat and smoke from the action end. Bulged the barrel. I was confused, initially, but I can still see what I am typing, at least.
