How do you crimp a bullet in a pistol case when the lead bullet doesn't have a crimp ring in it?

So what are you trying to do? Most lead is soft enough to crimp anywhere you want. Accuracy might suffer but ... I think Hornady make a small device to put a channelore in bullets.

I don't think I've ever seen a lead bullet without a crimping grove.?[?]

    ATF

230 rn bullets for .45 acp have no crimp grooves.I"m sure there are others.
I just adjust the die to become a taper crimp for use in my .45 long colts when using up these bullets.

Taper Crimp is the way to go with any lead bullets in straight walled pistol cases all you need is .001-.003 smaller then flush . Too much roll type crimp can cause bullet damage and bulge case causing feed problems .

Thanks the the great info...since I am loading 38 S&W and they don't make it with a taper crimp die...at least I haven't found one...could I use a 38 Super and just shorten the dies by .125 inch?

Use a 9mm taper crimp die.

Corbin makes a great tool for putting a cannulure (sp?)in lead or jacketed bullets. Worked great for putting a groove in 200 gr. XTP's that were made for the 10mm but that I like to load in my 38-40.
That said, with lead bullets, like everyone has said, the lack of a groove shouldn't be a problem. 9mm taper sounds like the way to go.

Bullets made for black powder didn't need crimp grooves. The compressed powder keeps bullets from being pushed into cases in tubular mags.
