Colt Navy or Pocket Police?

I bought this at an auction today, but don't have it in hand. It was marked "1870 Colt Navy .36 Ser # A44387" but the serial number wouldn't be right, I don't think. My guess is it might be a 1862 Pocket Police. Anyone in the crowd good enough at Colt identification to do it with this limited info?

Looks like an 1861 Navy. A '62 Police has a rebated cylinder to get .36 balls in a .31 frame.

Yep, definitely a Model 1861 Navy with 4-screw frame cut for a shoulder stock.

A real Colt '61 Navy has 7 1/2" barrel and is 13 15/16" long overall. I just now measured mine, original with 100% scene & 50% finish.

The pictured piece looks like the barrel is shorter than 7 1/2". It may be a '61 Navy if it measures up. If it is not a repro and in that condition it is worth some very serious money.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I'm holding my breath and hoping its a Colt Second Generation 1861, but it may be a Navy Arms, Traditions or something similar... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=94056211

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you should have contacted the dealer regarding this point. Before bidding on the revolver. I owned a couple of the U.S. assembled and sold by Colt, replicas years ago. Their values would be substantially more then the ones imported by Dixie, Navy Arms and all those other dealers over the years.

My "impulse buys" seldom, if ever, turn out to be very good ones. I do much better when
I'm in a familiar subject area, take time to do my research and do the things I'm supposed to. [B)]

The serial number isn't right for a Second Generation Colt. It would also be marked "Colt's Patent" on the frame with the Saml. Colt New York address on the barrel.

The serial number range for the 2nd Generation 1861 Navies was 40000 to 43165. It was also a 3-screw frame, not 4. However, the 3rd Generation "Signature Series", made in 2002, was a 4-screw frame cut for shoulder stock and would have Sam Colt's signature on the backstrap.
