The "Maverick" line was made by Mossberg to sell in stores like Walmart and Kmart. The model 88 is very similar to the 500 but the quality is lower. My cousin bought one 4 or 5 yrs ago for 179.99 at a kmart in Ithaca, NY. If he sold it to you stating it was a Mossberg 500, thats just wrong. Hope this helps

The safety is in a different location, tang on the 500, trigger guard on the Maverick. Also the forends are slighly different so they won't interchange. IMNSHO, the Mossy is the nicer gun, but the Maverick is better suited for use with a pistol grip because of the location of the safety.

Mostly the same gun, but if you paid for a 500 then you should get a 500.

Differences include the safety (tang vs. crossbar), earlier mavericks had only a single rail to the bolt from the pump handle, and the forearms are different (buttstock is same). Also, the Mav barrel is a tad heavier, has some parts are made in Mexico (used to be assembled there but now in Tx).

Personally I'd get the 500, even if you have to pay a tad more. Its the same as the 590 with the exception of the mag tube & spring, and the 590 was the choice of the US military. I've abused the daylights out of my 500 and its still pretty good. 10k+ rounds thru it, including a weekend of shooting it with the action full of nasty red clay sand.

I've looked at the Mavericks and they sell for about $160.00 at
    Wal-mart.

I like the Maverick because of the location of the safety, ala Rem. 870, on the trigger guard.

If you paid for a Mossberg and got a Maverick you probably paid too much. Just my opinion.

P.S. I'd be leary of someone who advertises one thing and sells you something else. They are not the same.
