I use lens cleaner solution and tissues that are made for use on camera lenses. These are inexpensive and are available from camera shops.

A "lens pin" is real handy also.

A can of compressed air to blow away any tiny bits of debris before applying the solution or cloth is a good idea, too.

what ever solution, lens paper or what ever.., ALWAYS do it in a circular motion, NEVER "cross wipe !!"

Never use your shirt tail, clean hankie or other cloth. All will have some timy amount of grit that does scratch the lens and coatings.

    woodshermit,

+1, remove the debris that will scratch the lens. If blowing it away doesn't work try spilling some water on it slowly. That will soften up the stuff that may be stuck on hard and let it be removed as the water flows off of it. In case you need to gently (I stress GENTLY)remove mud or what-not off the lens, copious amounts of water will help lubricate the lens as you wipe. Remember, even with coated lenses, that you can push too hard and scratch the lens. Rub gently with as much water on it as you can. If you have an old scope you might not want to try this as they may not be waterproof. Turn the scope lens facing down to do this and use a spray bottle if you have one.
