Stevens Springfield 511 Questions

First, how do you remove the barrels? I know it doesn't take down like most Stevens such as the 311. Second, how does one stain hardwood stocks made from maple? Regular stains just don't penetrate or stain unevenly. Maybe it would be best to leave the wood blond. How did Remington and other companies get such even and dark woodlike colors on their hardwood stocks such as the Model 788 carbine? Thanks for any help.

I can't help you out on the take down part of your sxs, but I have bought a few beater 311 and have refinished the wood myself. I don't like that blond maple look myself!

After I stripped the stock and prepped it, I used some Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. It is very good for the softer woods and to help absorb the stain evenly.

I also combined a couple of the darker stains together to get the color I wanted. It may take a few coats of stain to get what you want. You may have to redo it several times, but like I tell people, its my gun and my time. Good luck in your project.
