K98 Sight Hood

Okay, I've looked around and probably missed it, but here's my question: I just acquired a 1940 dated K98. Of course, it's missing the capture screws, cleaning rod and sight hood. However, before I purchased these items, I started doing some checking. First of all, I've figured that the cleaning rod my rifle needs is the 10" version (I used a wire rod to gauge the depth, 10" comes out to almost 1" on the end of the barrel). I noticed that the grooves everyone talks about on the front sight base for the sight hood do not exist on my rifle. Does this mean that it shouldn't have a sight hood? Thanks!!

Re: the sight hood. It means that the rifle came with a muzzel protector/sight hood. It's a spring loaded device that slips on over the end of the barrel and is held in place by rotating it over the front sight.

    ??????

The sight hood itself is a spring from what I've seen. I've read that prior to 1940, the K98's didn't come with sight hoods and the sight bases weren't notched for them. My rifle must be an early 1940 model that was "transitional" and never notched. Cool...

The 1940 guns do not have the sight hood as orginally made, the switch took place in 1941. I have seen earlier guns that did have the groves for the sight hood but this would not be orginal.

If I may put in my two cents worth. If you plan on using it as a shooter then I would not worry about the site hood. To me I find it hard to see the front site, with out it no problem. However, if you are trying to "restore" it to its issued state then that is a different matter. To my knowledge, most was taken off because of the same reason that I do not like the hoods. My opinon only. Good luck with it. They are really great rifles.
