Hello, I would appreciate some help selling a gun for hubby. I have an antiques & collectibles shop, but I've never sold a gun in it and no one ever asks for one. lol Anyway, I keep getting quotes from the dealers and I'm curious if they are quoting for the gun only or if they are including the collectible price, or if it even HAS a collectible price?

It is a S&W 44 magnum - 629 classic with a 5 1/2" barrel and rubber grip. It is ingraved with "Illinois First Handgun Deer Season - Jan. 17, 18, 19 1992" It has the state ingraved with a "1st" in it. It has "1 of 150" on it and it has some deer ingraved on it.

I don't know much about guns, so if there is anything I can add please let me know. Thank you very much.

    Depending on condition, around $500.

It has no collector value that am aware of.

BTW "Illinoise" is correctly spelled Illinois, no e on the ende lol.

You know, I deleted that e! I think my computer is messed up. lol

Well, that's about what was quoted to me. You'd think someone from Illinoiseee <: would want something like that tho. Anyway, I appreciate the quick response.

Actually, if it did not have the engraving on it as you described, those 5 1/2" models are kind of sought after. especially if it were unused, or appeared that way.

    EDIT:

You might think about taking some good clear pictures of that, and listing it on the auction side. Start it at around 350.00-400.00, and let the market decide what it's ultimate value is. You can add a reserve to it so you are protected at the minimum price of what you would accept.

I am curious about the barrel length,5 1/2 inches.
Barrel needs to be measured from Muzzle to the front of the cylinder. Just might be a 6 inch.

They made Classics with the 5 1/2 inch in limited editions, and limited numbers.

They may have made 5 1/2 ones, with S&W you never know. When I made my comment it was after looking in in the SCSW 3rd Edition.

Hello, that's kind of sad about the engraving making it not as sought after, but I guess I can understand. Also, it is in great condition, but it isn't new. I measured it again and the 6" comes to the middle of that bar in front of the barrel. It is actually a bit over 5 1/2". I think I need to get hubby to get on this site. I think he would enjoy it. Thank you

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to sell it here, I was just trying to get more information. I guess I won't tell hubby about this place, and thanks for the welcome.

Don't take the word for it from the previous poster. You and your hubby are very welcome here, and by the way, I am sorry, but welcome to the forums. You are not wasting your time here, and there is a vast wealth of information here within the members. Don't let something like what prangle said chase you away...prangle has no idea.

Welcome to the forum. To easily measure the barrel, open the cylinder latch releasing the cylinder, and put a pencil down the barrel until it is flush with the forcing cone. Then mark the pencil at the muzzle. Measure the pencil and you have your barrel length. I'm betting it is 6" For what it's worth I think 629's with laser type engraving are generally worth less than equal condition unengraved 629's Sorry, but most wheel gun nuts are purists.

    Lynn,

Just a clarification - the fellow (prangle) who wrote the "you are wasting your time here" comment wasn't doing so because asking a value is somehow forbidden - if you read his post regarding the "39 year old Cobra" there was some disagreement between he & other members regarding the value of his gun. He evidently holds in low regard those with whom he disagrees and was expressing a personal opinion of the group that although you can ask in this forum he advises against it.

As much as I'd like to believe my own 1950's NIB with papers (to include the "Join the NRA" mailer) is worth big bucks, I know it sat on the gun shop shelf for about 6 months before I bought it for $400.00 - and this is in CA where they're very hard to find.
