I have some Green Boxed Norinco ammo and was wondering if anyone had information on if it is lead or steel core ammo.
It is from Factory 71 and was produced in 1987 & 1988.
Thanks,
Dan

As I told you before, factory 71 made both steel core and lead core ammunition. The way to tell is lead core will have a serrated cannelure around the base of the bullet. A steel core round will have a smooth cannelure around the base of the bullet. These markings can be seen just above the mouth of the casing. This rule only applies to factory 71. All of the ammo you are inquiring does have the smooth cannelure and is certainly steel cored. These people are of no help to you, in your quest for Chinese steel core ammunition. As a courtesy, I would like to offer some reading material to you. Click on the link below. There is tons of good information, regarding this type of ammunition, on this website. This is just one of many threads that cover this subject. You should become a member, if you are not already.

Good luck with your search for the "good stuff". Factories 71, 31, 351, and 311 manufactured match grade quality steel core. Factory 31 also has tell-tale signs. The bullet will have green sealant if it is lead core. It will have pink or clear sealant if it is steel core. Most other factories, you will just have to pull a bullet. You can also bet that any of the chinese ammo 1987 and before will probably be steel cored.
