colt 38 special

I have a Colt 38 special that I cannot identify. It has a 2 inch barrel, 6 shot revolver. It has standard wooden grips but has a military shield at the top where the colt emblem usually is. The serial number is 4799-LW. It looks like a early model colt cobra and the ejection rod is almost as long as the barrel and is not enclosed. I had heard that colt had made a revolver that designated as the "Airman" but I can't find any reference to it. Any help please.

I have a friend whose Father had a Cold 38 special.

She showed it to me and the markings are as follows:

    Patent 1884, 1900, 1905

    Colt Army

    38 special

    PTFA1MFG

It is double action but that is all I can find on the gun.

It is in pretty good shape.

Any help as to what it really is and a ballpark value?

    Thanks

From your description, and the caliber markings, it might be the model known as the "Army Special" This particular revolver model was made by Colt from early in the 20th Century, until the late 1920's.

We would need quality photos to verify this, and to be able to give you a accurate valuation.
