Sir, It is the same cartridge and is safe to fire a 25-20 Winchester
in 25-20M. In the old days, ammo for these catridges was
marked 25-20 Winchester, Marlin and Remington on many boxes.
Marlin did cut there chambers slightly longer and therefore
if you reload cartridges from the Marlin, I have heard you have to trim them after a few firings because they elongate.
The cartridge box in this auction is the high velocity 25-20..
note how it is marked. Winchester, Marlin, Remington.
It would be fine to shoot the no longer made High Velocity 25-20
in your rifle if it made after 1900 and it is an 1894 and not the 1889 Marlin. Hope this helps.

Some people may try to convince you to custom make 25-20
MARLIN ammo and some will say their is a difference.
Some much time has gone by since these rifles came out that many
don't know what they are talking about when it comes to comparing these cartridges. Some may even try to get you to have your chamber recut. Please dont do it.

That is why I provided the link to the cartridge box from the 1920s
to show they are interchangeable. Frank Barnes, who wrote the famous
"Cartridges of the World" notes that 25-20 Remington, 25-20 Marlin,
25 WCF, 25-20 WCF, are interchangeable. The reason Marlin never put
25-20 Winchester on their guns is because they did not want to
remind you of their competitors name.
