had this part just fall out of this rifle. It doesn't look broke so what holds it in? Is it going to have to be a gunsmith fix or a simple fix by a simple man? - It is metal.

It sits in a couple slots made in the receiver for it. Pressure of the bolt against it is all that holds it it. Was yours metal or plastic? Early 760's had a metal one. It could have just worn enough so it no longer fit the grooves or one edge broke off. The bolt has to be removed to replace it. Unless you are familiar with completely stripping down the gun you are better off having someone who knows how do it do the job. I've seen kitchen table gunsmiths break a couple covers trying to get them in before bringing them in to have it done. Bolt and cover slide into the receiver together and on some guns can be fun to get in. It requires a special tool or some hedging on a tool to take apart the gun.

Your cover must be plastic. I've never seen a metal one come out. Like 41 said it takes a special wrench to remove the barrel to get the bolt out.
The only thing the cover does is keep dirt out of the action.
You can shoot it as is if you want.

You guys!! This is not that hard. With a little care and a screw driver that barrel is a snap to remove and reinstall the dust cover.
