Would a Browning A 500R be a decent sporting clays shotgun?

If you already have the gun, shoot it. I would not but a 500R to shoot clays.

The 500R, unlike the 500G is short recoil operated like that A-5. The 500G is gas operated. Basically is an astheticaly updated A-5, like a Franchi AL-48. It is going to beat you around a bit shooting clays.

    Best.
