muzzleloader shotguns

Looking for recommened loads for a 12 ga. single shot muzzleloader shotgun. Also which type of wads to use.

    If the gun is safe to fire (checked by a gunsmith), a good starting load might be 3 drams of FFg (82 grains), topped by a card over-powder wad, then a thick cushion wad, roughly 1 1/4 oz of shot (a rule of thumb for muzzleloading fowling pieces was equal VOLUME - NOT WEIGHT of shot and powder. You simply used the same measure for each), then an over-shot wad.
    The various wads are available from several reloading companies and muzzleloader supply shops. I buy mine locally (eastern PA), but it may be easier for you to order wads...and anything else you need...from Dixie Gun Works in Union City, Tennessee. They have an on-line catalog, too.
