A friend has been given a Marlin Model 36 and the butt stock has been messed up. Will a 336 stock fit without a lot of trouble?

I have found a Marlin Model 36 in very nice condition. The receiver is blued and says "Marlin Safety" on the top of receiver. It has a 20" barrel and is a 30-30. The Serial Looks like: D368X. I would like to know when it was made??? I have read on some forums that this gun was only made for two years...and the ones beginning with a "D" were made in 1947??
I have also read this gun was made from 1936-1948. The stock is not checkered. Thanks!!!
