Polishing engraved areas

My favorite shotgun has had a bad run a gunsmith did some damage to it ( I won't rehash that) one of the issues I have is the finish has lost its luster. He sent it back rusty.
I want to polish this engraved area to restore the luster seen in this old photo. What would you recommend?

It would be really easy to mess up the engraving...
If you really felt like doing it, I would use a crocus cloth on a flat backer...
Were it mine, I'd contact an engraver and see if they, or someone they recommend, could do it.
You really should send it out to someone that knows his, or her way around that kind of work.

Nice looking gun. Sad. [:(!]
We really need to see good pictures of the gun NOW, to advise you.
I'm thinking Simichrome on a washcloth-used very gently might help.
I'll order some Simichrome. Tonight.
After cleanup per the above recommendations, I'd investigate hard chrome
plate.
