compact 1911

Anyone have any problems with compact 1911? Are they a good open carry wepon? I have shot many 1911s, but never a smaller one. I like 1911 more than any other high caliber auto pistol.

Ive asked this before but does anyone know anything about the over-johnson thrasher model 3", there is a bunch out there about ria, but cant find any compact model reviews much less ones that seem honest... or recent for that matter. Like the Iver-johnson model, cant afford the kimber or S&W les baer etc. Would be nice for some feedback.

I want to buy one of the compact 1911 style .45's(Springfield, Para or Kimber) for off duty carry. I have not found any compact non-custom 1911's with an ampitextrous thumb safety. ( I'm a lefty) I am sure an ambi safety can be added? Would an aftermarket safety be the same as the full size 1911 or are they completely different? Don't tell me to buy a Glock, XD, etc. already have several of them. Thanks.

I bought one of the rock islands about six months ago. I haven't had any problems yet.

Be aware the shorter the barrel the more likely you are to have function problems with a 1911 Type pistol . Make sure you have a very firm grip and are pushing forward A light grip will NOT get the job done.

Here are some nice quality compact 1911 models although prices vary greatly depending on make & model and where you shop, $500 will limit you.
You may however be able to negotiate better prices, but as always check on GB first for the best deal though.

    S&W 1911 SubCompact
Kimber Ultra RCP II Compact 1911
    Springfield Armory GI 1911 Compact
    ParaOrdnance Warthog Compact 1911
    RIA 1911 Compact Officer model
    Detonics 1911 Mark IV Compact

Bought an ATI FX Titan a few months ago. Ran approx. 100 rds of 230gr through it. Very accurate from 15 yds, no problems or jams at all. Very happy with it for $479.

Love my Rock Island. Well worth the money, and no problems at all. Looks aren't everything.

As perry shooter has mentioned, there are reliability problems with the 1911 platform, when the barrel/slide gets shorter than 4 inches.

Because of the lack in slide mass, they try to slow down the slide velocity, by using dual spring rate set ups. Yes, I know that Glock has done this on some of their short, large caliber guns, but that is an entirely different animal.

I am not sure I would even trust a 1911, shorter than 4 inches, even if it were made by the most reliable 1911 maker, Wilson...and I have 3 Wilson's. I know there are some here who have good luck with some of the RIA's, and they are the same manufacturer who makes the ATI brand(the importer of the ATI brand products is local to me...and I am not impressed). Like I said before, I wouldn't trust the real short 1911 platform, to stake my life on.

The price and quality don't seem to meet at $500 range. Unless you pick up a used one.

A few years back you could've picked up Detonics Combatmasters about that price all day. I never cared for that scalloped thing on the slide. They started the use of three recoil springs to tame the pounding and later two.

After what happened with my aluminum framed shorty the price might be there initially but not so much later.

I reckon if I got $500 I'd save a few hundred more and buy in that range.

I am not a subcompact 1911 fan, they are not very fun to shoot and for simple carry I would go with a G36 single stack

edit: sorry not trying to spam or anything,

it's going to be hard to find a good 500dollar compact 1911
