What does the S prefix on my M29 Smith mean?

It does not really mean much. Smith used the "S" prefix on their "N" frame revolvers from 1946 to 1970. There were about a dozen models that had serial numbers beginning with "S"

After 1957 they began using model numbers, so you have a post 1957 gun. What does "mean" something is the numbers after the - "dash" in the model numbers.

When S&W made engineering and production changes to their guns they would assign a different number after the dash in the model number. So model 29, 29-1, 29-2 and so on.
