Which is hotter, which puts out more fire, the small rifle primer or the 209 shotgun primer?

    ag,

I have to ask what might you be using this primer on? If it is a muzzle loader, then by all means go with the 209. Been there and done that conversion thing, and don't like the rifle primer.

    EDIT:

    ag,
I would try it, but you would be best served by using the Triple Seven in the FFFg granulated version. From my experience this 777 granulated is easier to ignite than the previous corrosive version called Pyrodex. The rifle primer should be hot enough to ignite it, and be non corrosive. You should know that most #11, and musket caps are corrosive. Even if your powder is not, your cap is, and still need to take great care of things. Let me know how things work.

As for the substitute you mention, I have tried them all, from Goex, Black Canyon, Clear Shot, and American Pioneer...the 777 rules.

There is a new bp substitute powder called Blackhorn 209.
On the instructions it says it is to be used only with 209 shotgun primers.
I am inferring that a number 11 cap, or even a musket cap, would not be hot enough to fire this powder.

Well, I would like to shoot this stuff in the Hawken because it is billed as "non corrosive."
I have a conversion nipple for the Hawken that allows you to shoot small rifle primers, rather than #11 percussion caps.

So, if the small rifle primers are as hot as the 209 shotgun primers I would like to give it a try.

All of this is why I stick with black and leave all the subs on the shelf. [:D]
