Personally, I use the purple foam earplugs available at any chain pharmacy store for a hearing protection rating of 32 decibels. (I think the brand is "Flent's").
As mentioned that really is about as good as you can get out of plugs, plus they are pretty cheap. The rubber or wax types may be slightly more comfortable, and re-useable, but they aren't as protective.
Putting the muffs on top of plugs will cut out a little bit more sound, and it helps for the louder rounds.
You can go with fancier plugs that have built in electronics to let in spoken sounds, but you're really not going to get much more protection.

They have to be molded, but I see dealers at the larger gun shows.

I find that I actually get better hearing due to the directional mike on bird and prairie dogs sounds than with my normal hearing. Batteries AA last almost a year.
