Removing Poly from Gun Metal

Hi guys! I have a question regarding polyeurathene. At least, that's what I think it is. I bought a WWII mauser that someone coated the entire rifle in. Since the stock was sporterized, I don't care about that. Heck, it's even quite nicely done! But I would like to take it off the metal barreled action since it is completely original, non-import. I have the bands and such and wish to restore it to it's wartime glory! How can I strip the rifle without damaging the original metal? Thanks for your input.[:p]
