Best .40S&W gun with manual safety, cont'd

I've continued this for two reasons:

a. Pretty much *EVERY* service-type handgun is currently available in .40S&W. The "best" gun in .40 is simply the one YOU like best.

For guns with external safeties, that includes the CZ-75 type guns (includng the Tanfoglio Witness, but NOT the Israeli Jericho, which has a decocking safety), the Beretta 96 (and Taurus version), the Browning Hi-Power, and of course. . .

b. Nobody in the last thread mentioned the old standby, the 1911 pistol, in .40SW.

Lots of manufacturers offer these, and not only can you buy one off the rack with pretty much any bell or whistle you like already installed (beavertail grip safety, ambidextrous safety, adjustable sights, varying barrel lengths, etc), 1911 accessories are plentiful and relatively inexpensive, *and* most gunsmiths have experience working on these.

If you are wedded to the concept of an external safety, you could do a lot worse than the old workhorse. Don't think for a second you are giving anything up with "only" 9 rounds of .40SW, but if that really isn't enough for you, you could go to a double-stack version of the gun.

    The now no longer made Steyr Mannlicher M-40 had/has a manual pull down safety lever inside the trigger guard just in front of the trigger - it is set to off merely by flicking the trigger finger upwards when inserting that finger into the trigger guard. This is an additional safety to the "Glock like" trigger lever safety and the firing pin/striker block safety. I have an M-40 and like the concept of the additional manual safety. Apparently, not many others, including the engineers at Steyr, also did like it, as this feature was dropped on later models.
